The UN, the International Financial Institutions, the OECD, governments, employers' associations and a number of trade union organisations are promoting Corporate Social Responsibility as a way to make the multinational corporations behave well. Most of it is based on volontary ethical rules. Many organisations criticise the lack of sanctions and enforceable legislation if and when corporations operate in breach of the rules. Others question the entire approach and ask for strict regulation of these companies and measures to limit the power of multinational corporations. What are the experiences so far, and what are the alternatives?
