Consumer awareness does have the power to put pressure on producers to respect social and environmental right. Most of the flowers bought by consumers in developed countries are produced in the south and brought by airplanes to the north. In Europe there are several label initiatives like FLP (Flower Label Program), FFP (Fair Flowers and Plants) and TransFair, promoting consumer awareness and labour and social standards in the flower industry. How do they work and what impact does this have for the working condition of flower workers in the south?
