In the last few years, the prices of commodities such as copper and gold, as well as oil, have rocketed - and so has investment in mining. But in many cases, countries are getting very little back from this investment. The deals they make with the mining companies - sometimes advised by the IFIs- allow the companies to pay very little tax, so the profits stay in private hands rather than being used to bnefit the countries' people. NGOs in Zambia, Bolivia and the Philippines have researched their national situations in detail, with some shocking findings. Together with Christian Aid, they will present the findings here for discussion. The workshop will be of interest to anyone working on IFIs, mining, tax, or investment.
