There was more drama when delegates at the World Social Forum raided the outside catering crews from at least two major Nairobi hotels demanding reduction in food prices.

This was the second time that the forum participants were storming premises with demands for price reductions. On Tuesday, South African delegates mobilised Kenyan slum dwellers into forcibly demanding the waiver of the entrance fee at the venue of the meeting.

Some participants raided Windsor and Norfolk hotels’ catering services demanding reduction of food prices. The management at Norfolk had apparently been tipped of the impending raid and they moved fast to lock them out, but the raiders successfully snatched food from The Windsor Golf and Country Club stands.

Windsor food and beverage controller, Mr John Mburu, confirmed the mob had raided the stand and demanded free food. "They said that Five Star hotels had no business selling food at the WSF saying their prices were too high," he said.

The raid organised by a group calling itself the Progressive Youth Organisation demanded free food from the hotel.

As he was consulting over the issue with his bosses from the head office, Mburu said the rowdy youths raided the kitchen and stole all the food.

He said their food prices reflected the quality of the service and the ambience they accorded their customers.
