Guidance for registration of activities in WSF Common Space
Introducing the notion of "groups of organizations"
This text gives main methodological indications about how to use this new site when registering activities for WSF2007 Nairobi , valid for the first three days and the fourth day
Our advice it to first read this text quietly ( you can print it clicking on printer icon in top right corner of the central part of the screen) before going ot the site
Link to access the site, and to precise technical indications is at the bottom of this text

1 – First register you organisation (if your organisation is not registered yet )- so that your organisation is included in Common Space
Registration of organisations for Nairobi forum are open , and you can register your own organization, as you always have done in the forums ,
Nevertheless , for the preparation of activities in Nairobi we have now a new way to interconnect with other organizations. This new way will make possible that you exchange more easily about activities to be developed in the forum with other organizations acting in the same direction, or with similar objectives, or working on same thematic
If your organization wants to interconnect with others in the preparation of the activities ( specially for those of the fourth day ), and has some networking focus, we suggest to you , after registering your organisation, to register Groups (that can be possibly built up later ), around your organisation ( see point 2)
If you don’t do this, you can always exchange messages with other organizations, but you will loose the opportunity of having automatically a "common space" with them , sharing a discussion list and folders to edit, store, and comment documents accessible to all the group
2 – Second , consider registering "groups" around your organisation networking focuses - this way you are ready to network actively for preparation of Nairobi activities
(of course you can also get your organisation included in an existing group, see at end of this paragraph 2)
( this is do be done after having already registered some organisation)
Once you have registered a group around your organsiation with a name suggesting the focus of this group ( see below) , you can invite other organizations- with which you wish to interconnect- to join your group , and the group will grow in a horizontal way, through co-optation, and with no formal hierarchy : all partners can have the same rights and access to editing the documents of the group
How to reflect the group focus in its name when initiating a group? :
Tip: use a short name for the group at first , giving a hint on the focus of the gruop (this first name should be short enough because it will be the mailing list name that you will keep forever after in the group) – then you can extend the name of the group as you please by editing its profile(*),
Some suggestions
For a group preparing an activity in Nairobi: "Preparing an Nairobi activity on (topic name) "
For a group preparing a fourth day activity : " Assessing a Nairobi agenda on (topic name)"
For group having a scope beyond Nairobi : " Ongoing working group on (topic name)
Also existing names of network and campaigns can be given to groups
. A mailing list is automatically associated to each group, and links all participants to the group, that are here in the name of the various organization listed in the group " profile" visible in the site . You can start to dialog ,and exchange immediately with them without any other protocol. You share also "common space" with them , where you can edit, store, and comment documents, accessible to all the group
Some other organisation may have already initiated groups your organisation wants to join in .
you can browse the existing groups ( top menu "groups" ) select one and ask to get included it (in the name of your organisation) in by clicking on "participants"
3-Third : enter in cooperation with your partners and create documents
you can input documents in the space of your organisations and groups with text and images , comment them, exchange on your mailing lists and prepare some inputs for activities and proposals ( see concrete indications on how to do this in the reference guide, accessed when you are logged in)
4 –…and then Fourth : consider registering activities
( deciding whether the activity will be registered in the name of a group of organisation or in the name of an organisation alone)
for each activity fill the form for describing your acitvity in the commons space form – and the Nairobi logistics form (if the activity is in nairobi)You can register your activities in the name of one organization, as you always have done in the forums ,
Nevertheless , for the preparation of activities in Nairobi we have now a new way to interconnect with other organizations. This new way will make possible that you exchange more easily about activities to be developed in the forum , with other organizations acting in the same direction, or with similar objectives, or working on same thematic
If your organization wants to interconnect with others in the preparation of the activities ( specially for those activities of the fourth day ) we suggest to you to register your activity in the name of a Group of which your organization is partner
If you don’t do this, you can always exchange messages with other organizations, but you will loose the opportunity of having automatically a "common space" with them , sharing a discussion list and folders to edit, store, and comment documents about this activity accessible to all the group
5 – Fifth Consider registering "proposals"
( especially proposals to be discussed in the 4rth day )- fill the formAs per its charter. "The World Social Forum is an open meeting place for reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, formulation of PROPOSALS, free exchange of experiences and interlinking for effective action, by groups and movements of civil society"
Consequently in the common space , wsf participants can register Proposal for alternatives, actions and agendas directed toward social change, can be issued by an organisation alone or by partner organisations
Proposals can be outcomes
of their joined activity held in wsf process in nairobi or on line .s to be discussed in some activities organized by proposal promoter willing to discuss it with new possible partners, and amend it to arrive to a broader consensus for instance during the four days of Nairobi wsf2007 forum, and especially the fourth day
You can register your proposals in the name of one organization,
However, as in previous steps , if your organization wants to interconnect with others in the preparation of a proposal ( specially for those proposals to be discussed in activities of the fourth day ) we suggest to you to register your proposal in the name of a Group of which your organization is partner
If you don’t do this, you can always exchange messages with other organizations, but you will loose the opportunity of having automatically a "common space" with them , sharing a discussion list and folders to edit, store, and comment documents about this proposal accessible to all the groups
